From his blog: Palmetto Bay Resort in Belize Continues To Feature “Green Development”

This boutique luxury resort on the Placentia Peninsula is a trendsetter when it comes to its “Green Features”!

An artist's rendering of the Palmetto Bay Resort in Belize.Palmetto Bay Resort is one of the leaders of “green” Caribbean developments in Belize. This luxury resort has integrated into its design certain features that other developers are watching closely. Palmetto Bay Resort has carefully considered its impact on the environment from the earliest planning stages of its development. Some of the features they have implemented are:

- Geothermal cooling and heating technology.

- Solar power for outside illumination – pathways, water features, landscaping and the beach.

- Grey-water systems to recycle water.

- LED lighting that will reduce energy costs by as much as 80 percent.

- Indigenous species of plants, including fruit trees, in the landscaping.

- Cisterns to catch and store rain water and act as a renewable water supply for the saline pool, water features and landscaping.

- Strategically implemented wind power.

The Palmetto Bay Resort at Maya Beach in Belize. This gated project has plans for around 120 full-ownership condominiums. The initial phase that has just been released has 36 whole-ownership Caribbean beachfront condos starting in the low $300,000s US and they are currently the most sought-after resort luxury real estate for sale in Belize. It is just a short two-hour flight from Houston or Miami to Belize where there are no restrictions on foreign ownership of property or capital gains tax. This is a project you may want to put on your list for your piece of paradise! They even just announced a fly-in package for people who want to seriously consider this as their next tropical home.

The Toucan is the national bird of Belize. Follow it's snout, it's never in doubt!OK… so how is this for a description of what Palmetto Bay Resort has created? As you walk into your Caribbean condo you first notice a wraparound veranda overlooking the turquoise-blue Caribbean Sea. What I immediately do is dump my watch and find my bathing suit. The temperature is around 85 degrees Fahrenheit with a delightful warm breeze, and I then head to mashed-potato coral sand. Then the stress really starts because a decision needs to made: sunbathe; snorkel, SCUBA dive; drink… because thirst is a Enjoy SCUBA diving in the Caribbean to see all of the beautiful sea life.dangerous thing; read; nap; eat; schedule a jungle tour checking out how many Toucans I can spot, and many more choices to consider. Here is the fun part – I get to do it ALL! My first task is to take out the cold beer in the fridge and head to a lounge waiting for me on the beach. All the rest of the remaining choices will show up in their proper order… actually, there is no proper order. This mindset is the way I get to “Caribbean Time” as fast as possible.

Belize offers greaty views of the Caribbean. Here is more good news for those you intrigued about buying luxury property in Belize. Belize has made owning real estate very simple and easy with some of the most advantageous offshore investment legislation in the world. The official language in Belize is English, and the legal system is based on English common law. Belize has no capital gains tax, no inheritance, estate or probate taxes and no restrictions on foreign ownership of property. The ease of air travel to Belize from the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. is effortless compared to many of your choices for other tropical destinations.

The Placencia Peninsula offers relaxing luxury living on the Caribbean. Finally… you will discover a country of diversity! It has a very wide variety of ethnic backgrounds that live together in a marvelous melting pot, each adding to the cultural color of the next. Belizeans are some of the friendliest people in the world. They are a cross-pollination of cultures – ancient Mayan people, Spanish, British, African roots, Mexican, Chinese, Japanese, Lebanese and Indian influences, AND the official language is still English. This is one of the special Caribbean destinations that you will want to put on your “must-see” list. Let me know if you want more information about my favorite spots. Until next time… fair winds!

I’ve been down to Placencia a few times and this area is a hidden gem. Love the snorkeling, clear blue waters and the laid back atmosphere of Placencia. I’m heading down next week with my wife and we’ve planned a trip out to Laughing Bird Caye (amazing snorkeling) and a trip to the Cockscomb Wildlife basin - Snorkeling and Jungle all in one day - where else in the world can you do that?
  2. Andrew about 3 hours later:
Anyone who is interested in sailing, snorkling, fishing, kayaking or diving should visit Belize. The best place on this hemisphere to enjoy these activities. And from my travels in Belize, Placencia is the best all-round launching point.
  3. Steven about 4 hours later:
Placencia is a tropical playground. It's a short distance to the coral reef and a stones throw from the Jungle in the Maya Mountains. Great for water sports and eco-tourism. It is truly the next Carribean hotspot!

What's not to like? Belize is the best country in Mexico/Central America to live in. English speaking, legal system based on British Common law,tax friendly, great weather, lots of water sports/eco-adventures and it's not crowded! Add in a "green" resort that works with my own personal ethics and I'm sold! The price is right as well... Sun, fun, friendly, safe and a good investment which will increase in value as Belize is discovered... not bad, eh? (must be Canadian!)

I love the idea of “green” development as well. Jim Walberg on September 3rd, 2008 at 8:43 am # Thanks for checking in, Sandy. Belize is a place that needs to be experienced first hand. There is no way I can describe it properly with words. I left out a focus on the diving and the sailing opportunities. Belize has the second largest barrier reef in the world! The diving is amazing! The best sailing opportunity is to sail south the the Bay Isles off of Honduras. They are breathtaking islands with anchorages that have 100 feet of clear visability so you see your anchor hit the sandy bottom. Let me know if you need more information about this fasinating Tropical destination. I have lots more waiting for you. Jim Greyden Douglas on September 3rd, 2008 at 11:39 am # I have to agree with Jim, Belize absolutely must be experienced first hand to appreciate all the diversity that it has to offer. Not only are the water activities abundunt but there are also a miriad of Myan ruins to explore, inland trips going through some of the densest and wild jungle you have ever seen and some of the largest cave systems in the world. That coupled with extremely low population leave you with a feeling of going where no one has been for a very long time. Belize truly is a remarkable place with alot to offer every type of traveller. Jim Walberg on September 3rd, 2008 at 1:43 pm # Hey Greyden, Thanks for confirming that the first hand experience of being “in” Belize is the only way anyone can truly appreciate this magical country. Until next time…fair winds. Jim David Bauman on September 3rd, 2008 at 2:16 pm # I’ve been down to Placencia a few times and this area is a hidden gem. Jim Walberg on September 3rd, 2008 at 2:31 pm # Hey Dave, It is so fun to hear from others who have discovered the diversity, beauty, and adventures awaiting those who experience all that Belize has to offer. Enjoy your time in Paradise! Jim Jim Walberg on September 3rd, 2008 at 2:36 pm # Hello Andrew, Sailing and diving are two of my passions in the Caribbean…and Belize is hits a home run on both of these interests. And…in addition, it allows for so many more opportunities for a traveler who is interested in all things connected to the water, and those interested in the eco-adventures available in Belize. Let me know of other adventures you are discovering there. Until next time. Jim Ashley on September 3rd, 2008 at 2:50 pm # I really feel Belize is the best of all world. English speaking, close to North America, great jungle that is set back from the ocean ensuring you do not get the run off into the ocean and cloudy water. This creates the amazing under water adventures that everyone is referring to. I agree with others it is a hidden gem! The government realizes this and as such 70% of the country is not allowed to be developed on. The time to experience this place is now! It is truly eco-luxury and barefoot living at it’s best. Ashley Jim Walberg on September 3rd, 2008 at 2:55 pm # Hello Ashley, Isn’t it amazing that we have such a gift with Belize generally in our “back yard”? How fun is it to have such a “real estate friendly” country on the Caribbean side of Central America? With the responses we are getting from the articles I post on Belize, it won’t be a hidden gem for much longer. Those that are even thinking about a place in Paradise better take action soon! Thanks for your comments. And…I still barely wear shoes, and definitely no socks. Until next time. Jim Shannon on September 3rd, 2008 at 4:46 pm # Palmetto Bay looks like the ultimate vacation spot. Cant wait to visit there on my next vacation! Jim Walberg on September 3rd, 2008 at 4:56 pm # Hi Shannon, You will love your vacation adventure in Belize. Jim Walberg on September 7th, 2008 at 9:01 pm # Hello Linda, Thank you for your keen observation regarding a no-brainer place to visit and live. The Palmetto Bay Resort is a knockout. Let me know if you have any future plans to visit Belize. I will provide you my favorite spots. enjoy…eh! ( Actually, my parents came from Sweden.) Jim Diana Allen on September 8th, 2008 at 10:34 am # Thanks for the great article. I have traveled and lived in the Caribbean for many years and Belize is all that plus the incredible jungle. I have visited twice and am still out of breath with wonder. Jim Walberg on September 8th, 2008 at 10:39 am # Hi Diana, The Caribbean is my second home. I have sailed from the BVI to South America. Belize contines to be one of my top five favorite destinations. What were the experiences you had during your two visits? Enjoy your day! Jim William Ridley on September 8th, 2008 at 1:59 pm # I first started looking at Belize about 20 years ago because of its fantastic reputation for sailing and scuba diving. I’ve since learned though that this still undiscovered paradise is the perfect playground for active people with varied interests. In addition to water sports, exploring ancient Mayan ruins and observing the plethora of wildlife in the Belizean jungles is a unique opportunity you just won’t find in many places in the world. Not to mention being in a safe and English speaking country. I don’t hesitate in recommending it though you better do your due diligence now. Belize is where Costa Rica was 10 years ago in terms of real estate prices and is set to sky rocket. William Ridley
